WHO IS THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE?
The word apache comes from the word "yuma" for "fighting men and the word "zuni" meaning enemy. This tribe consists of six sub-tribes:Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalearo, Jicarilla, Lipan and Kiowa. Each sub-tribe is from a different region.
Where Did They Live?
The Apache migrated to the Southwest United States from Canada in the 1500's and 1600's and settled in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The Apache traveled in the high desert mountains and plains. They hunted and gathered food and doing some limited farming in warm weather. Because they roamed from place to place, the Apache built houses that were small and simple,easily constructed and with very little furniture.

What advancements did these people have?
To make clothes, the Apache killed deer and dried the skin for clothes and ate the meat. The men wore deer skin skirts, leggings and moccasins. A deer skin cap with attractive symbolic ornamentation was worn. The women wore short deer skin skirts and high boot top moccasins. The women made baskets. Flowers from plants were used to color baskets. They used the coiling and twining technique.
