The Chippewa Indians build a lot of stuff like birch, bark boxes, baskets, bead work and dream caters.
There were two types of dwellings used by the Chippewas.in the woodlands,Chippewas people lived in the villages of birch bark houses called waganogans or wigwams. On the great plains, the Chippewas lived in large buffalo-hide tents called tipis.Tipis were easier to move place to place than a wagannogan.
A wigwam was a round building with a round top.
it was made from tree logs, covered again with bark. Some were additionally covered with mats or hide. Some were quit large about six feet long. There were huge rush mats in front of the fire, and brightly dyed mats on the walls. The women made the wigwam as colorful as they could.Extended families-Kids,parents,and grand parents-all lived together in one wigwam.
A wigwam is NOT a tipi.A tipi is totally portable. It is made out of long poles covered with hides. Some wigwams were fixed shelters. Some were a mix of permanent and portable.

Families were important for the Chippewa.Families were called clans. When a baby was born the child became a member of its mother's clan.Although the Chippewa did not call each other by name, they did give each clan a name.Clans had animal or birds name.
